The Moon is when we go inside to connect with the innermost “self”. The Moon carries a “motherly” archetype, femininity. She is in tuned with your needs, your feelings, if you’re happy, if you’re sad, she comforts and she nurtures. Luna focuses our most basic needs, after all – she comes from the Earth. The Moon is not technically a “Planet” and referred to often times as a “Luminary”. The Moon illuminates and lights up our emotions – the inner world.
The element that the Moon is in identifies the inner “type”: earth, air, or water. This plays a significant role in our interpersonal relationships. A person with an “air” Moon for instance needs the space to think and expand themselves mentally – they need to be talked to, while a person with a “water” Moon needs to be allowed to feel and express themselves, they need to be heard and empathized with. The “earth” Moon may need to be touched and/or validated. The “fire” Moon may be more concerned about action and doing, achieving, or have a group focus. The Moon can also tell about how our early childhood relationship played out with our mother (or mother-role – for some people this could be a nanny, a father, an aunt, or other family friend that fit this mold better than our biological mother), after all our mother is our very first “loving” relationship. The Moon is exalted in Taurus – this sign, having a similar nature, gives the moon strength and energy and its influence is considered to be of a good nature. The Moon is in detriment in Capricorn – the sign opposite of the sign she rules (Cancer), and it is said to have a negative impact. The Moon is in fall in Scorpio – the sign opposite of its exaltation which can create problems and a lack of strength and power.
The Moon orbits the earth, spending roughly 2.5 days in each sign – and roughly 28 days for a full cycle. As she moves through the signs, she will light up areas of our natal charts, giving greater access to the inner depths of that particular environment. Staying tuned in to the cycles of the Moon as well as the sign she is in, is equally important. A “disseminating” Moon in a sign – where we energetically reap and share, will have a different energy than a Full Moon where the time is ripe or in other words feel that moment of absolute fulfillment. The Moon is a fresh energy, something that we can rely on to be consistently on the move, vs. a much slower moving planet like Saturn or Neptune. Just as well, the Moon transiting “slower” moving planets can help break up stagnation or to those planet energies that we may have difficulty working through.
